It can drive subscriptions. It can generate first-party audience data. It can support sponsorship. It can fuel social channels. And it can create entirely new content products.

But there is a problem: an archive is only as valuable as your ability to find what’s inside it.

For many rights holders, the challenge isn’t that they don’t have enough content. It’s that they have too much of it – decades of matches, goals, interviews and iconic moments spread across tapes, hard drives, media libraries and storage systems.

Monetise moments you have already created

Audience engagement is only one part of the opportunity. Archive content can also contribute directly to a rights holder’s wider commercial strategy.

There are opportunities in sponsorship too.

Ahead of the 2021 UEFA Champions League final between Manchester City and Chelsea, Opta supported Mastercard’s Priceless Comebacks in Football campaign.

Historical Opta data was used to identify the probability of teams recovering from unlikely deficits in previous Champions League matches, helping power a film which generated more than half a million views on YouTube.

Archive provides brands with something particularly valuable: an opportunity to associate themselves with sporting moments audiences already care about.

And rather than creating an entirely new story around a sponsorship proposition, rights holders can begin with thousands of stories already sitting within their archive.
